Quilting has routinely taken place here in Johnson County for the past 50 years. A group called the Johnson County Piecemakers have served in leadership roles teaching others for just as long. They have hosted quilt shows and activities consistently each year. After covid, sewing and quilting has a rejuvenated interest. At first 11 people who sew that are in or affiliated with the Johnson county Homemakers worked together to make over 500 facemasks. The FCS agent, recognized the need for positive and constructive activities for youth and adults alike, and developed a lesson on making t-shirt quilts, basic quilting and dyeing fabrics. This lesson included making the basic 9 patch quilt block. 60 grab and go bags were created for the general public with another 60 created for a specific FCS classes at Paintsville High School. Tutorials were created for use in the facebook platform and a specific group created and housed under the Johnson County Extension Arts. This topic will house more topics than just textiles. Posts are already being made with people young and old creating the 9- patch for the first time. Other agents are requesting the t-shirt block quilt lesson plan. 75 are already on the facebook page. A live presentation was held in September. A follow-up activity will be to assemble the separate blocks into small quilts for foster children. Two weeks before school was out, 50 FCS students were able to attend the oscar where they were able to work on sewing and dyeing techniques and recieved face to face hands on instruction from leaders. 85% stated it was their first time to thread a needle, tye a knot and sew a running stitch.
