Cattlemen's Face Book Page

Planning Unit: Franklin County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Strengthening Knowledge and Awareness of Agriculture and Horticulture in Franklin County

Outcome: Initial Outcome

A new (young) Franklin County Cattlemen's Board member was interested in creating a Face Book page for the local association. He wanted a way to share information such as meetings and educational opportunities as well as a way for members to post if cows were out, lost or found or broken down while hauling cattle etc. Very few of the board members were on social media (1) and therefore couldn't help or advise.

The Franklin County ANR agent and he got together to create a prototype for a test run. He and his wife created the page and the ANR agent forwarded workshops, trainings and announcements via the Extension Office Staff Assistants. Within two months there were almost 50 members. The page functioned as intended with no selling or trading and no other unwanted activity.

After a few months on-line we went to the Franklin County Cattlemen's Board to see if they would officially adopt it, which they did. They are now on social media to share their chapter's and state news and events as well as Extension educational opportunities and help the local beef community should they be in a situation of need. The Extension Office Staff Assistants are administrators now and can post and monitor for the Cattlemen's Association. There are currently 61 members in the group (the association usually has around 100+).
