Plan of Work: Improving Access to Fresh and Affordable Food
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Families have been impacted financially and psychologically by the Corona virus Pandemic. The Butler County Extension Service worked with The Kentucky Dairy Development Council and the H&S Dairy Farm to secure a semi-load of fresh dairy products for distribution to Butler County citizens. The event was organized and promoted by extension service staff and volunteers. The event was advertised as Dairy Promotion Day. The Butler County Family Resource Center and youth service center, 4-H, FFA, local churches, members of the fiscal court, the entire extension staff, the family of the dairy farm, and other volunteers worked together to distribute eleven hundred boxes of fresh dairy products. Participants were able to drive through and get their food. Social Distancing was maintained. The food was purchased using federal Corona virus Relief Funds, and the distribution was done on the parking lot of the Butler County Extension Service. UK Extension nutrition information was given to participants as they received their box of dairy products. Each family received 1 box so 1,100 families were affected. The value of dairy products distributed was $33,000. At one time the line to get on the parking lot where the promotion day was occurring was over a mile long.
