Feeding America Mobile Food Pantry

Author: Laura Milburn

Planning Unit: Washington County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

According to the Food Insecurity Data for Washington County Kentucky, 13.4% of the population is food insecure.  To combat this hunger issue, The Feeding America Mobile Food Pantry has been serving Washington County on a monthly basis during the 2019-2020 year .  In addition to providing a variety of supplemental food for over 200 Washington County residents, the food pantry also delivers 135 Senior Commodity Food boxes.

Washington County Community Action coordinates the food available for distribution with Feeding America while volunteers pack the 300 family boxes and load them into the recipient’s automobiles.  Volunteers for this fiscal year include: the Washington County Cooperate Extension Service FCS Agent, Saint Dominic 7th and 8th grade students, Washington County Homemakers, and the Springfield Public Works Department.

This food distribution allows the Washington County SNAP-Ed Program assistant to place nutritional information, healthy recipes and invitations to upcoming community classes in potential client’s hands.  With COVID-19 this distribution was especially instrumental in placing commodity recipes, newsletters and researched based health information.
