Planning Unit: Edmonson County CES

Major Program: Backyard Streams

Plan of Work: 4-H Youth Development

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Every Year the Corp of Engineer at Nolin State Park hold an ECO Meet at the tail water area below Nolin Lake Dam. Several Schools in the region send their 4th grade class to learn about the environment and how to help protect it. Stations are set up in ten different areas on a variety of environmental topics. The kids spend 20 minutes at each station.

The Edmonson County Cooperative Extension Office has participated in this event each year for the past 16 years. The Agriculture & Natural Resources (ANR) Agent and the County Program Assistant each have worked at station to teach about an environmental subject. The kids are always fascinated to learn and want to share when asked questions.

For the past two years the County ANR Agent has teamed up with the Edmonson County Soil Conservation Office to present on the topic of water quality. We use the Enviroscape model that we wrote and were awarded a grant to purchase. We demonstrate how water quality can be negatively affected by many different ways and people when they don't think things through and don't follow directions properly. We have been a very popular station, and the Corp of Engineers want us to continue to present this topic. In 2018, 220 kids cycled through our station and in 2019, 250 kids were enthralled with our model presentation. About four months after the 2019 ECO Meet two kids recognized the ANR Agent at a store in town and commented on how they enjoyed the Enviroscape model and how it made them try to tell people not to litter.
