According to an American Camp Association article entitled, "The Benefits of Camp," 'Camp provides children with a community of caring adults who nurture experiential education that results in self-respect and appreciation for human value. All of the outcomes — self-identity, self-worth, self-esteem, leadership, and self-respect — build personal competencies. These personal competencies are reflected in the four "C's" of the camp community: compassion, contribution, commitment, and character! For years, campers' parents have reported that when their children return home from camp they are more caring, understand the importance of giving, are more equipped to stand up for what they know is right, and are willing to be more responsible. These are the qualities that will help build a successful nation and a civil society.

Children are at less risk at camp where they have a sense of community, develop inter-generational relationships, and learn through first-hand experiences. Trained, caring adult role models help children feel loved, capable, and included. Camp helps children grow by providing a supervised, positive environment that has safety as a primary commitment.'

Garrard County 4-H, along with Woodford and Scott County 4-H, planned, implemented, and evaluated a 5-day, 4-night 4-H Summer Camping Program. Campers had the opportunity to take four classes throughout the day, swim, and participate in a variety of individual and team-based activities. The success of each summer is built on the experience of 4-H Summer Camp in previous years and the opportunities to develop life skills in a controlled and supportive environment. During the 2019 4-H Summer Camping Session, Garrard County 4-H met all goals set by Kentucky 4-H regarding numbers of total participants. 73 participants (campers and volunteers) took part in the 4-H Summer Camping Program in 2019. Evaluations from Garrard County 4-H Campers, stated 91.78% improved on a life skill they can apply to their home life (making a bed, cleaning up after themselves, helping with chores or responsibilities), 97.26% built a meaningful friendship with a cabinmate or teammate, either from their home county or not, and 89% stated they would love to return to camp in the future.
