Wildlife Extension Radio Segment

Author: Matthew Springer

Planning Unit: Forestry

Major Program: Wildlife Habitat and Damage Management Education

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Beginning in the fall of 2018, Forestry Extension in with leadership from Renee Williams and Dr. Laura Lhotka launched a From the Woods Today radio show airing weekly at WRFL campus radio. As part of this new show, we included a Wildlife Sounds from the Forest segment to air each week. This segment was meant to bring attention to a common sound or situation encountered in Kentucky's forests that involved a single or multiple wildlife species. At this time there have been over 60 episodes of Wildlife Sounds from the Forest that have been populated by our wildlife extension program as well as several guests from various related natural resource fields. These radio shows have been created into podcasts and have received over 1000 downloads/listens. We expect to expand this show and continue to raise the awareness of Kentuckians on the overall impact Kentucky forests and forest management activities have on wildlife.
