~~The Bell County Agriculture Council’s annual Farm Field Day was held on September 1, 2017. The ANR Agent coordinated the field day and facilitated programs throughout the day. Educational programs presented during the day by various volunteers from the community covered farm machinery safety, chainsaw safety, rabies surveillance, feral hog management, UK physics zoo, and forage testing. Activities just for fun included pig chasing contests, pony rides, train rides, and a petting zoo. Cooperators included the following: Bell County Sheriff's Department, Bell County Farm Bureau, Bell County Conservation District, Bell County High School, Pineville Middle School, Harlan County High School, Knox Central High School, home school students from Bell and Whitley Counties, Refuge Baptist Academy, Backyard Beekeepers, Clinch Valley Beekeepers, Bell County Rescue Squad, Bell County Fiscal Court, United Trappers of Kentucky, the Kentucky Division of Forestry, Kentucky Department of Corrections, Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Farm Field Day is a joint program with ANR, FCS, 4H, and SNAP-ED. A total of 362 attended the event. Written evaluations were completed by attendees and indicated knowledge gained from the program would be used to improve farming practices. Farm machinery safety received the highest marks on the evaluation by most. Future field days will be planned using audience input recorded on the evaluations.
