Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)
Plan of Work: Nutrition Education Program (FCS Agent, SNAP-Ed, and EFNEP)
Outcome: Initial Outcome
The Lawrence County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences conducted a program through the online tool “Google Classroom.” This platform assisted the agent in addressing the need for nutrition classes, as indicated by the county’s higher then state average chronic diseases statistics, while marinating “social distancing.” Using Google classroom also allowed individuals who had never been to an extension program before to access Extension’s research based programing for the first time.
While the class was offered to individuals, most participants included their family in the educational fun. Families participated by watching videos, following along in their Nutrient Calendars, reviewing publications, and meeting with the FCS Agent online. The class was divided into units such as food safety, reading and understanding a recipe, proper measuring techniques, and more. 5 total families completed the online class, with an average participation of 8 individuals. The Nutrition Calendar, Plate it Up! Ky Proud recipes, Wally Cat publications, and FCS Extension publications were all utilized to make this program a success. In addition to the presented information, participants were also encouraged to share pictures and stories about their experience in the program.
100% of the families/individuals indicated that they learned something new from the class and 80% indicated that they felt more comfortable following a recipe (20% said that they felt the same). 100% said they would like to participate in a similar program in the future and that they would like to attend Extension programs in person when such a time is permitted.
