“The suicide rate of 10-14 year old's is up over 300% since the introduction of the iPhone/Android and the explosion of social media. 50% of high school kids have sent a nude image to a stranger if first asked (SOKC). There is a fight every parent must face to save the future of your children.” This information was provided by Michael Lemon founder of Cyber Safe Teen Nation. .Even with these statistics and an important message to tell, it is difficult to get people to attend meetings.

With the Caverna, Barren County and Glasgow School Systems and  FRYSC’s, the Barren and Hart County Extension Services presented a program for parents and the community. To have a better understanding of their children’s interest and time spent on the internet, importance of understanding Apps and the controls available to keep their children safe a program was presented by Michael Lemon and the Cyber Safe Teen Nation.  Community organizations were present to tell about their services, provide handouts and door prizes. One hundred fifty-five parents, students and community leaders were in attendance.  The biggest turn out in four years of doing the program for Cyber Teen Nation.  The evaluation showed that 100% of the audience had a learning experience.

The next day, the information on Cyber Awareness was presented to the High School classes at Caverna High School.  Many of the students were unaware that someone could be stalking them and the danger of many of the Apps. In conjunction with the speaker, the Barren-Hart Counties Extension Services and FRYSC conducted a Truth or Consequence Program for the Freshman Class at Caverna High School.  The youth reported a 98% eye opening experience to the scenarios.   This was the first program to be presented at Caverna; therefore, new volunteers and vendors were recruited. All of the vendors stated that this program was very relevant and should be conducted at all Middle and High Schools.  Two of the volunteers were retired teachers and commented that this program was one of the best programs that they had observed for the students.   One of the FRYSC’s from another school observed the programs and has written it into their 3 year Action Plan. One student said “My Mother came home from the program last night and took my phone and went through every App!” Progress!
