Major Program: Securing Financial Stability (general)

Plan of Work: Financial Security, Home Management, and Workforce Preparation

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

According to Community and Economic Development Initiative of Kentucky statistics, 73% of Carlisle County is farmland, making farming a major industry for the area.  A successful farming operation in Kentucky involves much more than just the "farmer" and "farmhands".  Agriculture in Kentucky is a family business, and therefore all members of the family play a role.  The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Services in Carlisle, Ballard, Hickman, and Fulton counties along with the Farm Service Agency, hosted the 2019 Four River Counties Women in Agriculture Conference.  The goal of the annual conference is to address the issues that women often handle for their family operations and provide information that will support their efforts.

This year 68 ladies and 8 gentlemen attended the event at the Clinton Methodist Church in Clinton, KY.  The program included a welcome from Cynthia Elder District 1 Kentucky Women in Agriculture representative, followed by Advocating for Agriculture: Sharon Furches, and Insurance and Liability for Property Owners: Shannon Waltmon and Jason Howell. A lunch was provided by River Valley Ag Credit and each participant received a promotional bag of products from sponsors. After lunch, Sarah Brown from Meadowview Flowers Story presented Flower Arranging in Natural Containers.  Post-program evaluations reported that 88% said that they will look into their insurance plans to help their family farm, 78% said that they felt capable of making better floral design decisions based on the floral presentation, and 98% said they had received information they could take back and put into good use.
