JR Homemakers

Author: Brooke Hogancamp

Planning Unit: Carlisle County CES

Major Program: Empowering Community Leaders (general)

Plan of Work: Leadership Education, Community Collaboration, and Advisory Council Development

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Carlisle County needs strong leaders.  According to the Community and Economic Development Initiative of Kentucky, the total number of jobs in Carlisle County is projected to decrease by 5% over the next 10 years.  With 17% of the county population already living in poverty, the county needs growth rather than a withering economic structure.  Strong leaders promote growth.

Through a partnership between the Carlisle County Homemakers, Carlisle County 4-H and Carlisle County High School Family & Consumer Sciences, 37 high school aged youth were able to partake in a collaboration program, JR Homemakers.  These young men and women participated in activities geared towards team building, strengthening leadership skills, and basic life skills.  85% of the participants had never engaged in a formal meeting structure, and majority were not aware of the vital soft skills needed to secure employment for a successful future.  Through the JR Homemaker program, these youth were able attain and build on skills that will benefit them for a lifetime and enrich the future of the community.
