After the tremendous success of the Oldham County 4-H Porch Project outreach, Oldham County Extension and the Oldham County Library partnered to provide 500 Porch Projects each week June 3 thru July 22 to all Oldham County residents as a part of the Summer Reading Program. Each week projects were distributed at the Extension office and two other library branch locations. In addition projects were delivered to summer feeding sites and food banks. A total of 3000 Porch Projects were distributed across the county.
The Victory Garden project in Oldham County was promoted during this outreach. This summer 750 garden kits were distributed by the Extension Service to youth and families promoting gardening activities. The garden kits included 3 different types of seeds, the containers to germinate the seeds, gardening instructions, Victory Garden materials and recipes to utilize the produce from their garden. Garden kits were deliver on Extension and library porches as well as delivered to summer feeding locations and food pantries.
“The opportunity to receive a creative weekly kit was a bright spot for my children and was easy to implement because of clear directions and supplies that were provided. We are very thankful for the kits” shared by a home school parent.
This outreach was an educational and financial collaborative effort of the Oldham County Extension Service, Oldham County 4-H and the Oldham County Library.
