Project Linus

Author: Nicole Gwishiri

Planning Unit: Bath County CES

Major Program: Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association

Plan of Work: Leadership Development among KEHA members and other volunteers

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

In 2018, the Family and Consumer Sciences Agent began working with a Homemaker volunteer to establish a Project Linus chapter for Bath and Rowan counties. The Homemaker volunteer was already involved in an area club, county Sewing Day volunteer project, and looking for more ways to stay involved and connected to the community in which she recently moved. The agent and volunteer decided to hold a monthly Project Linus sewing day. The purpose of Project Linus is to one: provide love, a sense of security, warmth, and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer "blanketeers" and two: Provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.

Since the beginning of the club in Bath County, our volunteer stated members have donated over 500 blankets that have been distributed to local children in need. These blankets go to hospitals, doctor's offices, and other places for children in need. In addition to the number of coverages and quilts, the members have gained new sewing skills that have assisted in generating additional income for their families. One participant mentioned she had earned over $1000 in the two years she's participated because of the skills she's acquired. Others have indicated they have taught others the skills needed to make or create blankets using various methods.

Despite the shutdown, COVID-19 has had on the project, over 50 donated to local facilities during this shutdown. We look forward to the continued partnership.
