Limited-Resourced Family receives USDA aid with Kentucky State University help

Author: Tehran Jewell

Planning Unit: CES District 6 Office

Major Program: KSU Small Farm Program

Outcome: Initial Outcome

This agent has worked with a Barren County KY farmer in cooperation with KSU's Small Farm Program. Initially we will work with this farmer in order to assess the cooperator in the feasibility of the USDA Rural Housing Agency’s lending processes; to assess the chances of her being funded through a loan to help secure funding for work needed to be done on her farm home in the year 2017. The farmer’s housing currently needs several upgrades including but not excluding anything not listed, roofing, siding, insulation, appropriate heating and cooling and etc.  The farmer and KSU area agents are in the process of getting the process started and hopefully in the future the outcome will be a loan procedure that will allow the farmer to have a house that is not only energy-star efficient, but also having a home that decreases their monthly expenditures on variable costs. This agent will continue to work the Barren County farmer to generate the outcome of sufficient housing.

Five Part Version Situation

Current Farmer is limited-resourced, socially disadvantaged, and needing assistance to help prepare her home to be energy-star efficient; thus, increasing her ability to live a comfortable life.

Partnership

The Kentucky State University Small Farm Agent has worked with the USDA Rural Housing Agency

Target Audience

Individual Farmer Educational Response

The farmer will have a better understanding of the USDA and its agencies

Outcomes

The participant will have a better understanding of the USDA and its agencies.  Hopefully the total outcome will be a funded housing project that allows the farmer participant enough funding to increase the necessities of her home; have energy-star upgrades.
