The Scott County extension agent, in partnership with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and the UK Animal & Food Sciences Department, held a Produce Safety Alliance (PSA) Grower Training on November 7th. This training was developed as a way to fulfill the educational requirement stated in the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). Produce growers must complete the training if they meet certain thresholds. During that training we had 15 producers attend from several counties. It was a full day training that covered a multitude of topics. Those topics included: Introduction to Produce Safety; Worker Health, Hygiene, and Training; Soil Amendments; Wildlife, Domestic Animals, and Land Use; Agricultural Water; Postharvest Handling and Sanitation; How to Develop a Farm Food Safety Plan. I was able to teach on the Postharvest Handling and Sanitation session. During this session I used informal ways to gauge the producers’ understanding. I would ask the producers to raise their hand if they understood a topic I was covering. Throughout the session, producers gained knowledge about postharvest handling and sanitation. They were able to identify areas of concern for contamination, name products that could be used to sanitize surfaces, and explain the difference between sanitizing and cleaning a surface.
