Plan of Work: Proactive Health and Wellbeing for all

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In March 2020, life as we use to know it completely changed. In Kentucky, social distancing came into effect, businesses had to close their doors, and a Healthy at Home Initiative was born. People were advised to stay at home to help slow the spread of the coronavirus, COVID-19. This put a strain on the local and national economy, increased mental health and substance use concerns as well as increasing overall stress issues that can affect general health.

To the Floyd County Judge Executive’s and University of Kentucky’s request, the Floyd County Extension Office had to close the doors to the general public and put a halt to all in person programming. Virtual programming and program bag kits them became the new normal to the Floyd County Family & Consumer Sciences Program.

In response to these new restriction, the Floyd County Family & Consumer Sciences program adapted new ways to reach the residents in Floyd County. Floyd County Family and Consumer Sciences created Programs on the Go kits. These kits where made up of different themes such as Green Cleaning, Families on the Move, Kids in the Kitchen, and the most popular Do It Yourself Mask kits.

In each kit there were various items pertaining to the theme of the kit, an evaluation card with a QR code linking it a qualtrics survey, a Healthy at Home Newsletter, and Cooperative Extension Service informational handouts and/or instructions. Around 665 Family & Consumer Science kits were given out. A total of 48 evaluations were completed. Out of those who completed the evaluations, 95% claimed they planned on wearing their “DIY” facemask, 100% reported to be more active as a result to the program kits, and 100% considered green cleaning as part of their everyday cleaning routine.
