In 2020 families have experienced a time like no other. When the COVID-19 global pandemic forced families into quarantine youth and families began spending more time at home, minimizing opportunities for youth to engage in typical extracurricular activities. Due to this situation the Hart County 4-H Program began designing and creating 4-H Grab n Go Kits for youth to have a hands on learning experience while at home. The goal of the Hart County 4-H Grab n Go Kits were to maintain ways for youth and families to engage with 4-H projects and educational activities while learning new life skills.
The 4-H Grab n Go Kits featured all seven 4-H program areas. The kits were given out free of charge to Hart County youth for 10 weeks at the Hart County Extension Office. Over 600 kits were given out in the 10 weeks.
Youth were able to practice mastery through this experience by sharing their skills with others while gaining confidence in completing projects and learning new life skills. One 4-H member shared this about their experience: “The gardening kits that we received from the Hart County Extension Office motivated our family to plant our first garden and grow our own fresh vegetables”. One parent stated: “The Grab n Go 4-H project kits have been awesome by child completed the woodworking kit and enjoyed it so much that they have made other wood working projects”.
