2019 Win With Wood

The purpose of this event is to acquaint/familiarize Kentucky youth with forestry/natural resources industries and potential career opportunities. This one day event encompasses nine individual and one team competition in forestry and wood technology for youth in the junior and senior age groups. The competitive events are: Compass and Pacing, Forestry Equipment Identification, Tree Identification, Tree Measurement, Wood Identification, Woodworking Tool Identification, Soil Judging, Invasive Species, Individual Woodworking Project and Team Woodworking project.
The 2019 Win With Wood competition was held on October 01, 2019 at the UK Wood Utilization Center, Robinson Center for Appalachian Resource Sustainability, Quicksand, KY. This year we had a total of 154 in attendance with a 104 of those being student competitors representing 5 different counties. Schools and clubs in attendance were: Buckhorn High School FFA, Carter County 4-H, Knott County Central High School FFA, Lee County High School FFA, Whitley Co FFA and Magoffin County 4-H. Participating youth demonstrated through their preparation in the individual events, they had acquired forestry and wood technology skills, natural resource awareness, as well as awareness of career opportunities as was evidenced by their performance at the Win With Wood program.
The junior winners were: 3rd James Wills (Carter co.), 2nd Emma Riggs (Carter Co.) and 1st Nevaeh Kouns (Carter co.). Senior winners included: 3rd Nathan Jewell (Whitley co.), 2nd Jake Prewitt (Whitley co.) and 1st Gracie Brashear (Whitley co.). Gracie also received the Albert W. Spencer scholarship to the University of Kentucky. Nearly Fifty support personnel participated in the event which included cooperative extension agents, agriculture teachers, UK personnel, Kentucky Division of Forestry personnel, forest industry leaders, and other interested individuals.
