Outcome: Initial Outcome
When the COVID-19 global pandemic forced Kentuckians into quarantine youth and families began spending more time at home, minimizing opportunities for youth to engage in typical extracurricular activities. Due to this situation the Kentucky 4-H Program began the Kentucky 4-H Virtual Experiences on social media platforms. The goal of the Kentucky 4-H Virtual Experiences was to maintain ways for youth and families to engage with 4-H projects, events and activities while learning new life skills through a trusted source with the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment Cooperative Extension Service.
Kentucky 4-H has featured all seven 4-H program areas through this virtual platform. Youth, families, professionals, and volunteers from across the Commonwealth have been featured. The audience of the Kentucky 4-H social media platforms has increased, along with the engagement rate of followers. This in turn has increased the presence and participation of new audiences as well as awareness of the benefits of participation in 4-H activities. Youth and families have had the opportunity through the Kentucky 4-H Virtual Experiences to connect with people from across the Commonwealth, the United States, and our world.
The Kentucky 4-H Virtual Experiences had 57 youth participate by sharing their skills in a program area of their choice. They were able to practice mastery through this experience by sharing their skills with others while gaining confidence in public speaking and the ability to craft and deliver a lesson. 33 Kentucky 4-H volunteers and 74 4-H professionals were able to share their expertise through the virtual experience series. Through collaborative efforts 135 different experiences were hosted for access by followers of Kentucky 4-H on social media.
From March 2020 the audience of the Kentucky 4-H Facebook page grew from under 6,000 to 9,133 followers. The engagement rate of the audience who follows the page is 4.99% with the average reach per post of 3,752 accounts. There were 286 posts made from the beginning of the Kentucky 4-H Virtual Experience reaching a total of 1,065,501 accounts.
The Kentucky 4-H Instagram account has 1,679 followers and an engagement rate of 16.4%. There was a total of 123 posts and 1,127 visits to the profile where more information could be obtained. The total reach of the Kentucky 4-H Instagram account was 29,164 during the Kentucky 4-H Virtual Experience series time frame.
In addition to providing education to engage in 4-H project work, the program was able to collaborate with the Kentucky 4-H Foundation in recognizing youth through the Kentucky 4-H Virtual Achievement Awards Celebration, Kentucky 4-H Live State Officer Announcement, Kentucky 4-H Night of Inspiration, and Kentucky 4-H Virtual Recognition Celebration. These special events brought in sponsors and donors of the Kentucky 4-H Program, recognizing their efforts, and rewarding youth for their work through awards and scholarships.
