Farmers in Scott County continually need to evolve their practices to become more efficient in their operations. Beef cattle production is an icon in Scott County. According to the 2017 Agriculture Census, all cattle and calves on farm total 28,509 head. Eden Shale farm is a demonstration beef farm in Owenton, KY that is operated by the Kentucky Beef Network. It serves as a valuable tool to farmers in the state because new ideas and practices are implemented at the farm and then farmers can visit to see the practicability and applicability of those practices to their farms. The extension agent worked closely with the Scott County Beef Improvement Association and the Eden Shale Farm staff to coordinate a farm tour of the Eden Shale farm. On December 13th, 21 Scott County farmers traveled to Owenton to tour the farm. They were met by Dan Miller, Kentucky Beef Network Industry Coordinator, who gave the tour and went over several different projects that had been implemented at the farm and the outcomes of those projects. Projects on the tour included fence line hay feeding system, tire waterers, flooring alternatives, bale storage and feeding structure, and rainwater collection system. Throughout the day farmers asked great questions and there were many conversations between stops about how these practices could be implemented in Scott County. Farmers were able to think about the possibilities of improving their own operations while conserving land, water, time, and labor.
