Planning Unit: Bourbon County CES

Major Program: Home & Consumer Horticulture

Plan of Work: Consumers, Restaurants, Institutions-Local Food Systems

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

During the past year the Bourbon Extension Service worked with Master Gardeners and other volunteers in establishing a heritage themed educational garden at a local retirement center.  Local administrators at the facility had relayed that there was a need for more garden related therapy opportunities for residents.  Possible benefits cited included increased exercise and stimulation for residents.  A local master gardener decided to help develop the project as part of their ongoing educational hourly commitment.  Plans were made to include agriculture crops that are either being currently grown in the immediate area or have been grown in the past.  Local companies donated different seeds and the garden area was prepared and seeded.  Residents and volunteers developed the project with over 15 agriculture crops.   To date, over 40 residents of the retirement and rehabilitation center have taken part in this horticulture therapy project.  Volunteers and facility workers have reported an increase in residents physical activity and stimulation due to increased time in the garden working on this project.
