Planning Unit: Breckinridge County CES

Major Program: Fit Blue/Get Moving KY

Plan of Work: Improving community wellness through nutrition, physical activity and safety

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Breckinridge County is a rural community with limited physical activity resources for individuals and families.  Based on current Kentucky Health Facts, 32% of the citizens report not exercising on a regular basis, 69% identified as being overweight and 35% as smokers.    To support and encourage physical activity, the Get Moving Breckinridge County (GMBC) Spring 2020 campaign was conducted.  In collaboration with the Ben Johnson Elementary School, Breckinridge County Public Library, the Breckinridge County Coalition for Change and Breckinridge County FCS Extension presented the GMBC program for a 4- week challenge to get families outside to walk, play and be more active during spring 2020.  Forty-five participants’ logged steps, with 73% completing the 4-week challenge.  To wrap-up the challenge a virtual 5K was offered and 25 of the Get Moving participated logged in time for completing the 5K.  A private Facebook page was utilized to share nutrition and wellness education.   Also, weekly prize drawings that included healthy recipes, wellness publications and incentives and a grand prize were awarded to reinforce participation. Seventy-seven percent of the walkers completed post-surveys and of those, 60% reported an increase in physical activity while participating in the program and 53% are or plan to continue to be active.  Ten participates reported making healthier lifestyle choices for themselves and their families.  Many reported the prizes and team support kept them motivated and accountable.  With the continued request for walking challenges, a 2021 program will be presented to support families in their efforts for overall improved wellness.
