Due to current events many families found themselves faced with empty store shelves in 2020. As a result many families had a new or renewed interest in home gardening. The Edmonson County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent and the Agriculture and Natural Resouces Agent partnered together to create a home gardening kit for families in Edmonson County. The kits contained 21 varieties of seed, seed starting trays, soil, SNAP publications on gardening, Plate it Up KY Proud Recipes, and the home gardening publication.
Fifty Edmonson families received a gardening kit. Kits were placed outside for families to pick up at their convenience. Kits were first come first serve. An online qualtrics survey indicated that families gained a better understanding of gardening basics. Verbal follow up surveys in June indicated that 40 families had planted seeds and harvested weekly from their garden.
Client testimonials:
“This is my first garden. I was worried about going out and buying seed. Thank you!”
"Loved this garden kit to go, it is giving my grandson some ideal of growing a garden and how the growing process works. He has already planted some of his seeds in his egg carton. Then when they grow we will transplant into my garden. Keep up the good work during these difficult stay at home times. Thank you"
