Major Program: 4-H Youth Development Programming

Plan of Work: Developing Necessary Life Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Corona Virus outbreak truly rocked the 4-H world, and Cooperative Extensions as a whole. When it hit in early March most people had no clue that it would be as devastating and life changing as it has been.   We learned a lot about social distancing, importance of hand washing, wearing mask and had to accept the fact there was now a new “normal”, whatever that turns out to be.

Schools began to close and students were expected to do NTI or other forms of alternative education.  Our youth were lost.  They were having to completely having rethink how they did their school work and some with no help from home at all.

Then 4-H events and activities that our youth look so forward to each year were being cancelled. This was a hard blow to the county, state and National 4-H Program and very bad timing, considering it was spring and summer is our busiest time.  Many events were cancelled, including Teen Summit, Teen Retreat, 4-H Camp, Teen Conference and the list goes on.

Social media became our main outlet of communication. It proved to be very successful in allowing us to stay in touch with our clientele and promote Grab-N-Go Activities, virtual learning opportunities, events and contest and other alternative forms of programming. Facebook and Instagram became the face of our county 4-H program.  During the period from March 16 through June 26, the Caldwell County 4-H Facebook page had reached 27,185 people in some form or fashion.   This number makes it evident, social media is a beneficial tool.  It allows us to communicate with youth and facilitate learning opportunities, which eventually can lead to positive youth development.
