Boyle Beautification

Author: Alexis Amorese Sheffield

Planning Unit: Horticulture

Major Program: Commercial Horticulture - Landscape Ecosystems

Plan of Work: Bests Practices for living and working in the local environment

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Over the past several years the Boyle Co. Horticulture Agent has worked closely with the City of Danville Beautification Committee, Clarks Run Environmental Educational Cooperative (CREEC), the Danville Garden Club and the Boyle Co. Trails Alliance to help establish native, educational plantings around Boyle County.

Just within the past 2-3 years a pollinator bed has been established downtown, native plants were planted on a new trail along a stream, a large rain garden was installed as part of the local water-treatment-plant campus, and a small rain garden was installed at a trailhead to catch runoff to help alleviate flooding of the local neighborhoodIn all these scenarios the Boyle Co. Horticulture Agent aided in plant selection, plant placement and general education on proper planting techniques. The agent also assisted with verbiage for signage to aid in the educational component of each area.

These plantings could not have been done without the joint effort of the city and county employees, local garden club grants and organizational skills of CREEC. The successes of these efforts speak to the great communication that can happen between extension and so many community members within the county.
