The extension office is one of the few places in all 120 counties of Kentucky, where residents can get unbiased, research-based answers to their questions. As the revolution of environmental consciousness grows around the state, the need for such answers grows with it. Specifically, in regard to chemical use in their gardens.
In Boyle County, the Horticulture Agent is responsible for helping meet those needs. By offering classes on a variety of subjects, including subjects like growing a garden, landscape plants, and tree care, the Agent is able to routinely advise homeowners and farmers alike, on the least hazardous approach to dealing with garden pests and diseases. Free soil testing is also available in Boyle County to help encourage accurate fertilizer applications. This year alone, the Horticulture Agent did 300 samples which helps people not only save money on product but also aided in reducing runoff and leaching of fertilizers into our water system.
All these tactics aid in creating a more sustainable Boyle County and more sustainable Kentucky. The Extension Office often hears back from both home owners and farmers on how valuable the services of soil testing and educational opportunities are to the community.
