Planning Unit: Garrard County CES

Major Program: Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices (general)

Plan of Work: Healthy Lifestyle and Life Skill Education

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent for Garrard County partnered with the FCS Extension Agent for Bullitt County on the "shelter at home” initiative to offer an online Needlework class. With the resurgence of heritage skills, Needlework can be a way to learn new skills of the mind, heart and hands.  Handwork develops focus and concentration. It encourages following a process in order to complete a project. It enhances critical thinking and math skills. It increases hand/eye coordination, small motor skills, and builds self-esteem. Moreover, this class provided a means to promote healthy, interpersonal relationships between individuals while sheltering at home.  Twelve Individuals from 6 counties attended the class with one youth participating.  Needlework Kits with materials to complete a Swedish Weaving on Huck Toweling project were sent out ahead of time. This project promotes the current 3-year program of work initiative of the Ky Extension Homemaker Association. This being the first year followed by weaving and pin weaving.

Survey results indicated: 75% would attend another session to get help and continue the development of this skill. 50% of the participants indicated they would work on and finish their project. All Participants reported enjoying this class and learning about Swedish Weaving on Huck Toweling. Follow-up with participants in the next few weeks will take place through emails. And other on-line instruction in needlework has been planned while not being able to meet in person.

The young 4Her who participated was so excited about what she learned and did in the process of the class that her mother sent pictures showing her work in such a short time.  Her expression is genuine as she proudly shows off her work.
