Growing Asparagus in the Home Garden

In order to overcome statewide social distancing mandates during the COVID 19 pandemic, Growing Asparagus in the Home Garden was produced and presented in April by the Scott County Horticulture agent for the statewide Horticulture Webinar Wednesday Horticulture series of classes.

For the initial on-line live webinar, 123 attended, with 79 responding to the initial follow-up survey. Of the 79 that responded to the follow up survey, 100% said it was very relevant to their gardening needs, with 97.5% saying they plan to use the information within the next year.

The webinar classes are posted on-line and public viewing continues.  As of June 2020, 319 participants viewed the webinar, with an average duration of stay of 61.5 minutes. In an additional follow-up survey, of the 52 who responded, 27% say they have they have started growing Asparagus.  Seventy-eight percent are planning to grow the crop within the next year. Respondents also reported that they learned the following: When and how to plant asparagus, there are male and female plants, when to harvest, use of foliage in flower arrangements, proper timing of fertilization, and ease of care.  One attendee stated “…excellent job in giving relevant information for anyone either planning to grow asparagus or already in the process.” Another stated, “Very helpful information for home asparagus growers. “
