In response to an overwhelming increase in the numbers of grandparents and relatives who are raising children in Kenton County the Cooperative Extension Service began a support group in 2004 to help those families. The support group has been the only one of its kind within the county that is not affiliated with a religious organization or specific social group. The monthly meeting serves as a place for caregivers to network with others in similar situations while also gaining knowledge regarding nurturing parenting, nutrition, estate planning, and self-care. A survey of the participants attending the monthly meeting and community partners who attend the Relatives raising children advisory group, revealed that the caregivers and community partners were greatly in need of a resource guide that can be used to look up information on necessary documents such as: health, finances, nutrition, education, emotional needs, and legal resources. As a result, the extension service collaborated with Children’s Inc. in Covington to revise the outdated guide with up to date information including new phone numbers for service agencies and schools in Boone, Kenton, and Campbell counties. The guide was printed at the UK printing office and distributed throughout the schools by the agent through the Family Resource Center Coordinators and also available online.. An updated version will be printed in the Fall 2018 as it is a very sought after guide.
