Program to Go - Green Cleaning

Author: Karen Denniston

Planning Unit: Bourbon County CES

Major Program: Promoting Healthy Homes and Communities (general)

Plan of Work: Wellness Education

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Green cleaning uses products with ingredients that are better for both people and the environment.  Many “Green Cleaning” products can be made using ingredients that many have in their homes.  During the COVID-19 pandemic cleaning has become even more important but cleaning products have become more difficult to find in the local stores.  These factors were the reasoning behind a Program to Go entitled “Cleaning and Disinfecting the Home”.  The Program to Go packets included the “Green Cleaning - Recipes for a Healthy Home” along with the ingredients to make two of the recipes.  Ingredients for No Streak Glass Cleaner and a spray bottle for the product were in each kit along with ingredients for Wood Cleaner.   The Cleaning and Disinfecting Kits also included information on “How to Clean a Cell Phone”, “Sanitizing Your Laundry” and “Cleaning and disinfecting your COVID-19 infected home”.

Thirty of these kits were assemble and placed in front of the Bourbon County Extension Office for pick up.  They were free to the public and were promoted on Facebook.  The only request was for each recipient to sign a recipient log that was placed on the table beside the kits and to complete an evaluation of the materials in the kit.

All 30 kits were picked up and 10 of the 30 completed evaluations of the Program to Go materials.  The results from the evaluations indicated the following:

  • 100% used the ingredients to prepare a green cleaning product
  • 90% indicated that they would make the product again
  • 100% indicated that they would try other recipes on the card
  • 100% indicated that they had never made their own cleaning products prior

One parent even shared the following on Facebook:

quote:  Thank you Bourbon County Extension and Kay Denniston for making cool at home kits.   Last weeks included clean at home kits.   Luke (her son picture below) made the window cleaner.  AND THEN USED IT!  Now toilet bowl cleaner!
