4-H Reaches Partners to Reach Underserved Audiences During Pandemic

Author: Kelsey Chadwick

Planning Unit: Graves County CES

Major Program: 4-H Youth Development Programming

Plan of Work: Promoting 4-H in Graves County

Outcome: Initial Outcome

During the COVID-19 pandemic, 4-H was able to partner with organizations serving underserved youth to reach clients who may not have had internet or transportation access to access Brown Bag or Virtual programming. Kits were assembled that included three lessons on international education including Japanese paper cranes, Taiwanese lanterns, and Mexican tissue paper crafts. Kits included all information needed to complete the lesson at home with all included materials.

Kits were then distributed to the CARDS After Hours 21st Century Program through Mayfield Independent Schools and to the Fancy Farm and Lowes Family Resource Center. These organizations delivered materials to the homes of their students who are most in need. Many of these students did not have the means to access technology or other educational options, so the 4-H Global Education bags provided them with at-home enrichment learning. Over 100 at-risk and disadvantaged youth were reached through this programming effort, and many of the youth reached identified as racial and ethnic minorities.
