UK Helps Farm Family Navigate Post-COVID Cattle Slaughter

Author: Brian Jeffiers

Planning Unit: Johnson County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Sustainable Farming

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

With outbreaks of coronavirus at commercial processing facilities, beef consumers and producers could find very few options for slaughter. When one Johnson County family was forced to book slaughter appointments beyond their planned dates, they sought the assistance of the Cooperative Extension Service to find an appropriate ration to maintain the appropriate weight for the eight animals until their harvest dates several months down the road. The CEA for ANR contacted the UK beef nutrition specialist and developed a ration plan that met their animals' needs using the feedstuffs the family normally uses, reducing costs and flattening the learning curve for feeding. The family is now working with that ration to maintain animal health and end product quality.
