Veterans' Home COVID-19

Author: Deborah Scaggs

Planning Unit: Pendleton County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, I, SNAP-Ed Assistant, have continued to work with the Shelby Valley Veterans’ Transitional Home.  The men who live there are an amazing group.  They have such wonderful stories to tell of how they come to live there, some, heartbreaking.

However, listening to them, you still hear the pride in their voices when it comes to servanthood.  Whether it is serving our country or the community in which they live.

I have continued to correspond with them through mailings, and another way I have been so pleased to help them with, is by providing plants for a garden.  I have worked with several of our farmers’ from the Farmers’ Market and they have donated different plants, such as bell pepper, sweet potato, squash, and onion just to name a few.

The veterans’ have a couple of raised beds and this is where they have started their garden.   One veteran said, “This is where I find my peace.”
