5K in May

Author: Alyssa Cox

Planning Unit: Rockcastle County CES

Major Program: Fit Blue/Get Moving KY

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to Kentucky by the Numbers: COVID-19 At Risk report, 41.4% of adults in Wolfe County struggle with obesity, 17.8% have diabetes, and 34.4% have hypertension. People with immunocompromising conditions, including the ones previously listed, are at a higher risk for COVID-19 and severe illness, particularly if the underlying conditions are not well controlled. Physical activity has been proven to be an effective strategy to control chronic disease.

In an effort to address this issue, Wolfe County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences and Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Specialists, hosted a month-long virtual physical activity program. Throughout the month, participants received daily emails with training guidance, including reliable information related to COVID-19. They also had access to an online group where they could motivate one another. At the end of the month, participants had one weekend to complete a 5K using their choice of movement.

A total of nine Wolfe County residents participated in the program and completed the 5K in May. One participant stated, “Training for the 5K made me feel a sense of purpose during these challenging times.” Several participants also expressed intentions to continue engaging in regular physical activity.

The 5K in May virtual physical activity program was a safe and effective way to educate clientele who are at high risk for complications associated with COVID-19.
