An aquaponics producer contact me about wilting plants and mold forming on lettuce plants. Approximately 15% of saleable crops were impacted. After an initial conversation and a description of the system, I was able to recommend a change in production practices to improve the situation and lower crop loss. These recommendations include removing solids that have built up in the system, improving aeration to the hydroponic beds, increasing sanitation and cleaning of the equipment between plantings, and increasing plant spacing to improve air circulation. After follow up, the producer reported no issues with wilting or mold on their crops and have not had further loss of produce. Humidity control in the greenhouse will be an issue in that Fall but we are working towards correcting that before the Fall/Winter growing season.
There are 3 commercial aquaponic growers in the state and this farm would be easily identified if the owners read this story. Please be cautious of posting this publically to help the producer remain anonymous. Thank you.
