According to the US Department of Agriculture, one mouthful in three of the foods you eat directly or indirectly depends on pollination by honey bees. Honey bee populations have been declining in Kentucky over the past ten or more years. Education is key in helping protect honey bees as well as teaching beekeepers how to care for their hives.
The Greenup County Beekeepers Association was formed by a hand full of members in 2017. The main focus of the Association is to educate local beekeepers and mentor beginning beekeepers
The association has grown tremendously since the beginning and now having more than forty members.Their outreach has also been amazing. The Beekeepers Association helped 5 beginning beekeepers during their entire first year. Four of the five beekeepers had a successful first year. This is a great success in encouraging our honey bee population.
In addition the Greenup County Beekeepers have established bee hives and Jr. Bee clubs in all Greenup County Schools. The Jr.Bee clubs have reached over 300 fourth graders and their families.
