Plan of Work: Utilize Leadership Skills to Improve Family and Community Quality of Life

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Things got off to a rough start for the newly certified 4-H horse club leader in Lyon County.  Growing up in the 4-H horse program in another state where expectations were different, this new leader had a hard time adjusting to the policies and procedures of the Kentucky 4-H Horse Program.  When members and parents became confused and came to the agent for help, it became evident that a face-to-face meeting was important.  The new leader felt she had been doing everything in an acceptable way and was not receptive to suggestions.  The frustration continued for members, parents, and the leader. The agent invited the leader in for another discussion.  Tears were shed due to frustration; but, slowly the leader became aware that it was her responsibility to operate according to Kentucky’s and Lyon County’s policies and procedures.  She agreed to stay on as leader under the guidance of the agent and learn Kentucky’s way of leading a 4-H Horse Club.  The situation improved and relationships were formed between all involved.   When the certified leader was hired for a new job that operated with a council and board setting policy, she stated that the training and guidance she had as a 4-H Horse Club Leader helped her understand the importance of following policy and procedures.  She told her council that had it not been for her 4-H training she could not have succeeded as a director in her new career.  Today she is happy in her career as a successful center director.
