Covid-19 will be a phrase that is remembered for many years to come. Much like the plagues of past, the Corona Virus has challenged our generation to overcome many new circumstances and develop new ways of surviving and conducting business. As with any plague, it’s not so much about what didn’t happen, but the things that were done to be prosperous in times of hardship. 2020 will prove to be one of those years that shows the strength of the American people.
During this time of hardship there have been many silver linings that have given people hope and help. On June 30th, 2020 the Christian County Cooperative Extension service, in cooperation with the Kentucky Dairy Development Council, Dean Foods, and Christian County FFA were able to do their part in helping and giving back to their community. With funds provided through the Corona Food Assistance Program (CFAP) they were able to establish a dairy product giveaway.
The dairy product giveaway provided dairy goods to the people of the Christian and surrounding county area. The giveaway consisted of boxes of assorted dairy goods. Each box had two gallons of milk, four quarts of flavored milk, cream cheese, sour cream, cottage cheese, and French onion dip. The boxes were given to 1,200 families in need to help them get through the Covid-19 pandemic. Along with helping families provide the nutritional requirements of their families, the program also delivered some much needed relief for another 100 plus dairy farm families in the county. As dairy production margins continue to shrink this program allowed producers a way of providing an outlet for their product as opposed to dumping it on the ground. CFAP was one of the silver linings during the Covid-19 pandemic that was a win for families and farms.
