Major Program: Farmer's Markets

Plan of Work: Accessing Nutritious Foods

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Elliott County Farmers’ Market is well frequented by shoppers hungry for fresh and local produce in the summer months. In an effort to fill the void of the vacant Family and Consumer Sciences Agent position, summer intern Alyssa Cox set up at the market several times throughout the summer. She used venue to inform the community about proper nutrition, cooking methods, and financially smart shopping practices. To draw people in, she handed out samples of Plate it Up Kentucky Proud recipes including cucumber, corn and bean salsa and blueberry cream cheese pound cake. Some of the recipes featured ingredients were unfamiliar to most of the shoppers, such as cilantro and gluten free flour. With these new taste experiences, cooking practices could have been influenced to include a more diverse range of nutrients. Alyssa also partnered with the other Elliott County Cooperative Extension Services summer intern MaKayla Rose, to distribute recipe cards and cooking utensils to those who were particularly interested in preparing the dish at home. There were over 150 people reached through this summer program. By shopping at the farmers’ market, community members learned about the nutritive quality of their produce, they learned about different dishes to prepare with their produce, and they obtained their produce at a more affordable price compared to shopping at a grocery store.
