Life Skills

The Johnson County SNAP-Ed Senior Assistant started working with the Johnson County Middle Schools Practical Living class for the 2019-2020 school year. We covered six lessons from the Teen Cuisine curriculum and combined some recipes for the Heathy Choices Adult curriculum. The four classes per day were excited to learn about basic kitchen skills. This will provide the students with much needed information and experience to further their high school career with culinary if they choose that path.

We started out with knife skills, then moved on to cooking terms and kitchen safety. After going over food safety we were allowed to move to the kitchen, where we made a verity of recipes. One in particular was the BBQ Chicken Salad from the Healthy Choices adult curriculum. The students were skeptical about trying it but were surprised that they all loved the combination of ingredients that made a great tasting recipe.

After the six lesson series was complete, the SNAP-Ed Senior Assistant got a message form the Practical Living teacher. She talked about how well all four classes done on testing in her classroom and that 85% of them made A’s. She stated that a lot of the students made the recipes at home for their families and were glad to say that they all loved them and wanted healthier recipes. During a parent teacher conference one parent talked about seeing her child’s confidence boosted while preparing food for the family. At this news the teacher has made arrangements to add the SNAP-Ed program as a regular part of the class in the future.
