Planning Unit: Campbell County CES

Major Program: Home & Consumer Horticulture

Plan of Work: Home Environment for Adults (HORT/FCS)

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

252 horticulture related soil samples were submitted to the Boone County Extension Service in the past year. Submitting and receiving a soil sample report is oftentimes the first and only contact our urban clientele have with our office. Soil sample results can be confusing and misapplication is quite possible. People don't always understand rates or fertilizer formulations.

In an effort to encourage people submitting soil samples to become life long extension clientele we strengthened our recommendation process. Soil sample results received back at our office are attempted to be sent back out to clientele the same day received. Results are always sent out prior to a weekend weekend or holiday. Hand written notes accompany all results and an individualized informational  work sheet is sent with all results. These work sheets were developed for fruit, vegetables, turf, tree and shrub, organic as well as side dressing tips.

167 of the 252 soil sample results received needed no phosphorous. Phosphorous is frequently applied with the use of complete fertilizers even though it is not required. Not only not needed but it has become harmful to the environment. Phosphorous is running off application sites and polluting streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans. In an effort to eliminate wasteful application of phosphorous we contacted all local fertilizer vendors and asked them to start carrying fertilizers without phosphorous. Most of them were happy to comply with this request. Clientele receiving soil sample results are alerted to the fact that we have recommended they apply a fertilizer without phosphorous and the reason s why. They are also told that they can readily find fertilizers without phosphorous.
