Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Initial Outcome

For the last eight months, the Whitley County SNAP-Ed Program Assistant has been working with Anchor Ministries to enroll their participants in a wellness program that complimented their current program and addressed the need for nutrition education. Anchor Ministries is a local church that serves women with a faith-based program for recovery support after drug or alcohol addiction. Just as progress was being made to confirm a plan, The SNAP-Ed program assistant introduced the idea of online programming as an alternative, and Anchor Ministries agreed.

The new format requires meeting via zoom and having a post-discussion in a participant group room on Facebook that was created especially to protect the confidentiality of the participant. The program consists of seven workshops using the Healthy Choices for Every Body curriculum. This program is still active and has been working great. From the point of view of measurement, it is too early to analyze the change of behavior, however, feedback thus far has been positive. One participant is already checking the serving size of packages and trying to plan meals according to serving size suggested. Another participant with an underlying condition was very glad that she now understands how to read a label. This new partnership was developed under very stressful circumstances, but the progress and interaction, even though socially distanced, has been a great reward.
