The COVID-19 pandemic revolutionized the way Nelson County Extension is able to reach the community with research-based information. In April of 2020, Extension Agents in the county collaborated to provide daily outreach to the public, providing updates on program availability via ZOOM and other social media outlets. By May, Agents had discovered a new way to encompass all program areas with a weekly program that was coined "Grow, Eat, Live". Agents have covered how to grow and identify potential issues with vegetable plants and fruit trees/bushes, how to harvest them, prepare to eat them and even preserve them!
Grow, Eat, Live has been a successful social media campaign, consistently totaling more than 850 people reached with each post. The program has covered tomatoes, peppers, summer squash and onions. Agents have asked the Facebook community for suggestions on upcoming topics, and for any questions community members have.
Agents plan to continue to provide Grow, Eat, Live topics and evaluate the program based on views, comments and audience reached.
