Nelson County Homemakers applied for and received a $300 grant at the Annual KEHA Conference in Louisville, KY for the development of a Cultural Arts and Crafts program in 2019-2020. The Homemaker Cultural Arts Committee was comprised of four individuals who felt the county needed to teach the skills needed to create cultural arts, including but not limited to, sewing, knitting, hand-stitching, painting, quilting, basket making, and floral arranging.
For the second straight year, the Nelson County Homemakers Cultural Arts Committee provided a years worth of programming in the cultural arts, one class for each month of the year. Participants learned many things including cake decorating, hand stitching, floral arranging, loom knitting, yeast baking and wood crafting. Starting with the $300 Grant from KEHA, the committee has grown their funds in order to create a sustainable and lasting opportunity for our community to engage in the arts. The classes have been widely attended and the Nelson County FCS Agent is looking for new ways to evaluate each class' effectiveness. Participant comments were encouraged this year utilizing google chrome books and living documents.
Many people became interested in attending classes after viewing pictures and information through social media and other mass media avenues. One person on Facebook said this regarding a December wreath-making session, "Would have loved to learn this . If you have more classes please let me know. Please, please!!!
