Due to the local distillery expanding from 4800 gallons of stillage to 58,000 gallons of stillage per day starting in March of 2018, the ANR agent approached the distillery and a beef specialist about having an educational meeting after several questions had been asked on ways to use stillage in cattle operations. A tour of the distillery was organized and a meeting at the extension office after the tour was held to educate producers on ways to use stillage on the farm. 75 producers attended the tour and meeting and Dr. Lehmkuhler discussed the options for feeder calves and cow/calf operations. Budgets were discussed and producers had several questions concerning the use of stillage, even though the product is free from the distillery there is a cost of handling the product. I had 4 producers approach me thanking me for setting up the meeting because they learned that stillage wouldn't work in their operation. Since the meeting, I've had 7 producers come in to the office to discuss using the product and how far they could economically haul a product that is 93% water. I have 3 producers that are using stillage and it is working in their particular situation. There was a need for education on the use of this product and extension responded.
