Planning Unit: Laurel County CES

Major Program: Farmer's Markets

Plan of Work: Strengthening Local Food Systems and Accessing Nutritious Foods

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

~~The Laurel County Farmers Market, the City of London and the Laurel County Extension Office collaborated for the 2nd Annual Farmers Feast.  The Farmers Feast program entailed a dinner where all ingredients are locally sourced. The dinner was an exclusive ticketed event held at the farmers market with half the proceeds going to Gods Pantry. The tickets were $20 a person and 200 tickets were sold. The Laurel County Cattleman and ANR agent prepared a “trash can dinner”. The dinner comprises of large stainless steel steam pots the approximate size of a trashcan with 7 layers of fresh locally grown vegetable and smoked sausage. The Cattleman prepared, cooked and helped serve the meal to the 200 attendees. The Laurel County Extension Family Consumer Science baked potato rolls and apple cake to accompany the meal. The farmers market was lined with tables and chairs highlighted by vases of locally grown flowers. Members of the Laurel County Farmers Market surrounded the market with displays and samples from their farms during the before dinner activities. Keith Rogers from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and Mike Halligan from Gods Pantry spoke during the dinner about hunger in KY and the farms to fork program.  WYMT featured the Farmers Feast during their noon, evening and morning segments.  I posted short video clips highlighting the preparations during the day, then one during the event as the cans were dumped in feed troughs. These videos reached over 6500 people according to Facebook. The dinner generated $2000 for Gods Pantry which they estimated into 32,000 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables for Kentucky Families.
