McLean County Poultry Expo

Author: John Fourqurean

Planning Unit: Trigg County CES

Major Program: Poultry

Plan of Work: Livestock Production

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

In the fall of 2019 this ANR Agent and a producer were discussing the fact that no poultry production educational sessions were offered by anyone here in Kentucky. This ANR Agent worked to plan the McLean County Poultry Expo in February 2020. The newly renovated Extension Facilities at Myer Creek Park would serve as the meeting location along with a indoor and outdoor trade show.  The McLean County Extension Service, the McLean County ANR Agent, field staff from Tyson and Perdue all partnered in the joint venture to bring an educational program to poultry producers in 7 surrounding counties. A specialist from the University of Georgia was the speaker discussing litter management to reduce the amount of paw burns that birds had as the entered the harvest facility. A problem that was brought to this ANR agents attention by field staff of the respective companies.

There were 25 exhibitors from 5 states that showcased their products inside and some larger equipment outside at the 2020 McLean County Poultry Expo. The McLean County 4-H Council served a sponsored lunch to just over 150 attendees.  After numerous personal interviews with attendees a producer made this comment “this has been one of the most informative educational meetings for Poultry Producers that I have ever attended” and an exhibitor had this to say “I hope that this is an annual event as I have made contact with more producers in one day as I normally do during a months’ time”. This ANR Agent and the McLean County Extension Service continue to provide meaningful and relevant programming to this community as well as surrounding communities.
