Myer Creek Park Improvements

Author: John Fourqurean

Planning Unit: Trigg County CES

Major Program: Community Engagement

Plan of Work: Developing McLean County

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

In 2019-2020 fiscal year the McLean County Extension Service embarked on a journey of monumental proportion. As the McLean County District Board members were holding a planning session for the year, a project to improve the McLean County Extension facilities at Myer Creek Park were discussed. This ANR Agent along with the McLean County District Board decided to apply, with the help of the McLean County Fair Board, for funds available through the Kentucky Department of Agriculture County Fair program. The District Board put up $20000.00 to receive $60000.00. The grant is a 75/25 matching grant.

After many planning sessions between the McLean County ANR Agent, the District Board, Fair Board, McLean County Fiscal Court and other interested community members a course of action was laid out to proceed with, if approved from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. After approval from the KDA County Fair Program, an addition to the livestock barn was made for a show ring/exhibition area, the large indoor building was insulated, covered in metal and HVAC installed for the purpose of holding meetings(local and area), shooting sports practice, exhibition area for 4-H and Homemakers during the fair as well as many community groups that will be able to utilize this facility now that these improvements have been made.

The McLean County District Board and this agent helped secure a total Investment in improvements of over $80,000.00 to the extension facilities at Myer Creek Park. These improvements will add higher rates of utilization of the extension facilities as well as a greater use of the county park thus adding activities that could draw other citizens from surrounding areas into McLean County. The fore thought of this group to improve McLean County will pay dividends into economic development as well as an improvement in the quality of life for McLean County community members.
