Container Gardening

Planning Unit: Mason County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Plan of Work: Home Horticulture

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

During the pandemic, many nursing homes and rehab centers have limited to no access for residents to have visitors; this can be a depressing time. Gardening can provide a positive outcome for residents as it can decrease stress, encourage healthy eating, and be a source of exercise. The Kenton Pointe Assistated Living Community contact the Mason County Extension Office, asking for assistance starting a container garden for residents to care for and maintain. The horticulture agent encouraged the Mason County Master Gardner Association to make this an opportunity for them to teach others while obtaining their volunteer hours.

Four Master Gardeners worked with Kenton Pointe to create a container garden, where residents watched from a safe distance. Containers were assigned to residents, and Master Gardeners taught them how to care for their plants correctly. This project has provided a sense of hope for residents as they now have a new passion while receiving many benefits.
